The 7 Best Things to Buy in 2017
Grab These Deals Before the End of the Year
Written by Darla Palmer-Ellingson in Home Travel & Leisure
We are about to be bombarded with sale adverts from now through the end of the year. In addition to gift buying, the end of the year is a great time to snag some deals for you. Here are the top seven things to buy before the end of the year to save big.
Score a New Home
If you are considering a new home purchase, don’t wait. Interest rates are rising, inventory is low and home prices are increasing. If you don’t get onboard the real estate train now, you may pay significantly more next year. The good news? You can lock in a great interest rate before the end of the year, even if you close the deal in 2018.
Gift Card Bonus Buys
Many popular restaurants offer gift cards for a price lower than the redeemable value. One of our favorites is Applebee’s, a restaurant that already has great specials throughout the week. We stock up on discount gift cards, combine that with a special, and have a great meal for two with an appetizer for $16 (not including tax or beverage).
Don’t forget your local restaurants. Many offer seasonal treats and gift cards, a perfect gift for family and friends.
Restaurants are not the only businesses offering gift card deals. iTunes typically offers gift card discounts around the holidays. In addition to an easy-to-mail gift idea, buy a discount card for you and enjoy downloads throughout the year at 20 percent off. Retailers frequently offer a gift card as a bonus with purchase. Target offered $100 gift cards with the purchase of an Apple Watch this past year, so watch for these types of bonus deals while doing your seasonal shopping.
Tool and Hardware Sales
The best time to buy tools and hardware such as power drills, wrenches and general tool sets is in December, during holiday sales. So, if Dad wants a new hardware gadget, or if you want to add to your own workbench, check those holiday sale ads and websites.
Electronics- Some to Buy Now, Some to Wait
Get a great deal on high-end electronics at the end of the year before new products are announced at the Consumer Electronics Show the first week in January. Prices will get even better on current models after new models are announced, so if you don’t need the latest and greatest, you can save a lot of green. The exception is phones—they are best purchased after the first of the year. Prices generally drop before new models are announced in the late spring—except for Apple products which seem to follow an unpredictable schedule. Older Apple models drop in price after new ones are announced, and since the iPhone 8 didn’t have significant design or function improvements, buying a previous model is a great deal now.
Black Friday has some amazing deals on TVs. Many stores only have a few of the sale units in stock, however, and there is the issue of battling the crowds. Two options—take advantage of a Black Friday online sale with free shipping or free store pickup. Or wait a week. This past year, the first week in December had just as many great TV deals as Black Friday, and you can skip the crowds.
Before you make a TV purchase, make sure it has a digital QAM tuner so it is compatible with Arvig’s digital TV service. If your TV doesn’t have a QAM tuner, Arvig has digital-to-analog (DTA) converter boxes available for lease.
Seasonal Décor Scores
Everyone knows holiday décor is best to buy right after the holiday occurs. On Dec. 26, you can pick up seasonal décor at 40 percent to 75 percent off. But if you must have new bling before the holidays, wait until Dec. 20. Around that date, retailers put holiday décor on sale. We have a holiday tradition of picking out special ornaments for family members each year, going on a special outing right before Christmas when all the regular shopping is done. The Grande Depot in St. Cloud, Minn., is a favorite spot. Three stories of kitchen supplies, home décor, gourmet food and a wine shop plus last-minute bargains (sign up online for free VIP membership) and festive atmosphere makes for a cheery outing.
After-Christmas Sales on Clothing
Clothes are extremely hard to pick out for others. So, while you are returning not-quite-right gifts after the holidays, pick what you really want at and save big. Check out your local retailers for sales and savings.
Retail-me-not is a great online app to download coupons right to your phone—no printing, clipping or remembering to bring coupons to the store.
Big Things in Small Packages
How about a head start on your shopping this season? Arvig is giving away an Amazon Echo Dot. The Dot uses Alexa, a cloud-based voice service, to serve as a personal assistant in your home. Alexa can read your news and information, stream music and connect to other smart devices in your home. You can set your alarm, dim your lights and even control your thermostat with the Dot.
