Vlog: 6 Ways to Optimize Your Home Wi-Fi Network

Written by Arvig in Home Technology for Your Home

Wi-Fi technology continues to improve, delivering faster speeds, more reliable connections and better security.

But today, more Wi-Fi-enabled devices are being used in the home, and each of your wireless devices is competing for a share of your router’s data stream. Luckily, you can easily optimize your home Wi-Fi network. Here are six tips to get started.

  1. Router location: For better signal range, place your router in a central location. Take note that Wi-Fi signals are easily absorbed by objects in the house, including walls, floors and furniture. Avoid placing it near electronics and home appliances, which can cause interference and further degrade your signal.
  2. Regular restarts: Rebooting your router allows it to re-sync connections. Restarting your router regularly will minimize connection issues. Just unplug the router for 15 to 20 seconds, plug it back in, and in about a minute, you’ll be back online.
  3. Boost security: To prevent unwanted network access, change your router’s default username and password by logging in to your router’s online web portal. To find it, type your IP address and the router manufacturer into a search engine.
  4. Explore other settings: Even if you don’t understand each setting or option, there are important basics to review. In the security settings, make sure you’re using the strongest encryption method―WPA-2, AES. If you want to dig a little deeper, you can change your router channels to reduce interference in your signal.
  5. Research available technology: Devices such as Wi-Fi range extenders plug into a wall outlet and can expand the signal around your home. Access point systems are another networking technology that establish new spots for Wi-Fi access. And finally, mesh Wi-Fi systems contain two or more router-like devices that work together to cover your house with a signal.
